The
Teachings of the Twelve
Apostles
In Acts
1:1-5 (RIV); The author writes...."In my former book, Theophilus
("lover of God"), I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

The
Transfiguration
Then he said to them all: ....."If
anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of
him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the
holy angels. I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not
taste death before they see the kingdom of God."
About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter,
John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes
became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared
in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure,
which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his
companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw
his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving
Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let
us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for
Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.) While he was speaking,
a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered
the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom
I have chosen; listen to him." When the voice had spoken, they found that
Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and told no one at
that time what they had seen."

Palm
Sunday
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethp'hage and
Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to
them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you
will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and
bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell him,
'The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.'" They went
and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied
it, some people standing there asked, "What are you doing, untying
that colt?" They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people
let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks
over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while
others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead
and those who followed shouted, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he
who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the coming
kingdom of our father David!" "Hosanna in the highest!"
Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at
everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the
Twelve.

Jesus
and the Twelve Apostles at the Passover....The Last Supper....
Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was
approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking
for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. Then
Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to
the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with
them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him
money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to
them when no crowd was present. Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on
which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John,
saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."
"Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. He replied,
"As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house,
'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover
with my disciples?' He will show you a large upper room, all furnished.
Make preparations there." They left and found things just as Jesus had
told them. So they prepared the Passover. When the hour came, Jesus and his
apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, "I have eagerly
desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I
will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of
God." After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this
and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit
of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying,
"This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In
the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is
the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. But the hand of
him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. The Son of Man
will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him."
They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would
do this. Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered
to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it
over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves
Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among
you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who
serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who
serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one
who serves. You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer
on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, so that you may
eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the
twelve tribes of Israel. "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as
wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And
when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." But he replied,
"Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." Jesus
answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will
deny three times that you know me." Then Jesus asked them, "When
I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?"
"Nothing," they answered. He said to them, "But now if you
have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell
your cloak and buy one. It is written: 'And he was numbered with the
transgressors' ; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes,
what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." The disciples
said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is
enough," he replied. Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives,
and his disciples followed him."

Judas
Betrays Jesus....
Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" While he was
still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large
crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the
elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them:
"The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." Going at once to Jesus,
Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. Jesus replied,
"Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward,
seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus' companions reached
for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest,
cutting off his ear. "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus
said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword." Matthew

Judas
bought a field...(Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood)
"In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a
group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, "Brothers, the
Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through
the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who
arrested Jesus--he was one of our number and shared in this
ministry."
(With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he
fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.
Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their
language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) "For," said Peter,
"it is written in the book of Psalms, "'May his place be
deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, "'May another
take his place of leadership.'" Acts

The
Crucifixion
Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him
to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, there they
crucified him, along with the criminals--one on his right, the other on
his left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know
what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting
lots. The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They
said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of
God, the Chosen One." The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They
offered him wine vinegar and said, "If you are the king of the Jews,
save yourself." There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS
IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. One of the criminals who hung there hurled
insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he
said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly,
for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing
wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into
your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today
you will be with me in paradise." It was now about the sixth hour,
and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun
stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus
called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my
spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last."

The
Resurrection
"After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the
week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There
was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven
and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His
appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow." "The
guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The
angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are
looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just
as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell
his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into
Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you." So the women
hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell
his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said.
They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to
them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee;
there they will see me." While the women were on their way, some of
the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything
that had happened. When the chief priests had met with the elders and
devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them,
"You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him
away while we were asleep.' If this report gets to the governor, we will
satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." So the soldiers took the
money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely
circulated among the Jews to this very day."

The
Ascension
"So when they met together, they asked him, 'Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to
Israel?' He said to them: 'It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.' After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes,
and a cloud hid him from their sight."

The Gathering of the Twelve
"Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called
the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. When they
arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those
present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew
and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of
James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women
and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers."

The
First Pentecost
"When the day of
Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like
the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house
where they were sitting. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were
staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When
they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each
one heard them speaking in his own language." Acts
2:1-6 (RIV)
Then (the Apostle) Peter standing with the eleven other apostles spoke to the crowd. He explained that these strange events had been predicted by the prophet Joel, and that Jesus' coming had been prophesied by David. Peter then explained that these events confirmed David's prophesied exaltation of Jesus and Peter exhorted his listeners to turn to Christ. About three thousand responded to Peter's sermon.

The Great Commission
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain
where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him;
but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the
age."
Matthew
28:16-20 (RIV)
The commission from Jesus suggests that his followers have the duty to go, teach, and baptize. Although the command was initially given directly only to Christ's Eleven Apostles, Christian theology has typically interpreted the commission as a directive to all Christians of every time and place, particularly because it seems to be a restatement or moving forward of the last part of God's covenant with Abraham in
Genesis
12:1-3 (RIV)
Other versions of the Great Commission are found in:
Mark
16:14-18, Luke
24:44-49, Acts 1:4-8, and
John
20:21-23 (RIV)

An excerpt from
http://www.keyway.ca/htm2000/20001122.htm
"Christ's immediate purpose for His twelve
apostles can be summed up in what some call the "Great
Commission":
"And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven
and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of
all nations, baptizing them in the name of The Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded
you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."
(Matthew 28:18-20 RSV)
"So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you
are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus
himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined
together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are
built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit."
(Ephesians 2:19-22 RSV)

 The
Choosing of Mathias
"Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been
with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning
from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one
of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." So they
proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and
Matthias. Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us
which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry,
which Judas left to go where he belongs." Then they cast lots, and
the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles."
